About Hassan University came into existence with the aim of serving the underprivileged and economically backward section of students of Hassan and nearby districts. The University started out as a Post Graduate Center of University of Mysore in 1992 under the guidance of the then Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Madayya with an allotment of 78.8 acres of land. The notification was issued by the University of Mysore on July 13^th 1992 to start the PG Centre of University of Mysore in Hassan. The inauguration of Post graduate center at Hemagangothri, Hassan was inaugurated by then Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka and chancellor Shri Kurshid Alam Khan  on 23^rd January 1993 in presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri M. Veerappa Moily.

For the last 31 years, the Hemagangothir, PG Centre of University of Mysore Hemagangothri, has catered the needs of Higher Education to His Excellency the students of Hassan and nearby districts like Mysuru, Hassan, Chikkamagalore, and the state of Kerala.

The Govt. of karnataka with the objective has established seven new model Universities in educational backward area of Chamarajanagara, Bidar , Haveri, Hassan, Kodagu, Koppala & Bagalkot Districts. Maximum utilization of IT without additional requirements of manpower will make these Universities different from Conventional once.

            Accordingly , the Karnataka state Universities (Amendment) Act 2022 (Karnataka Act26 of 2022) was enacted by the Karnataka state legislature in the seventy third year of the Republic of India and the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2022 was first published in the Karnataka Gazette on the 10^th day of October 2022 (Notification No DAPL 19 SHASAN 2022 Bengaluru dated 10-10-2022) whereas, University of Mysore was bifurcated and a new University called “Hassan University” came to be newly established as an Affiliating University

The Hassan University Hemagangothri campus houses Post Graduate Departments of Master’s in Commerce, MA in Kannada, English, History, Economics, and M.Sc. in Botany, Electronics and Mathematics.

The University introduces the following P.G. Courses from 2023 to 2024 an Hemagangothri Campus M.B.A., M.C.A., M.Sc. in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, M.S.W., and P.G Diploma Program’s  such as Taxation, Tourism and Development, Human Recourse Management (HRM), Marketing,   

The University library has a collection of 24,000 books and journals, required for teaching and research work. The Science block hosts a well-equipped laboratory for Botany, Chemistry. The students are benefitted from well-equipped classrooms, transport facilities, free Wi-Fi, CC TV surveillance, and round-the-clock security personnel.

Departments of Kannada, English, Electronics, Commerce, provide Ph.D. programs to national and international students. Many researchers have been awarded doctoral degrees. The professors of various departments have taken up research projects by getting grants from UGC, DST, and other reputed institutes.

As per UGC norms, a total of 11 committees including the Anti-Ragging Cell, Women’s Cell, SPARSH, Canteen Committee, Human Rights Cell, Student Welfare Office, SC/ST Cell, Village Adoption Programme, Transport Committee, NSS and Swach Bharath Committee have been functioning continuously in our center. Thousands of students who have successfully completed their master’s degrees from the Jnana Kaveri campus are currently contributing to society by working in various capacities in government, and private organizations
